The primary role of an exhaust system on your average vehicle is an attempt to reduce some of the toxicity of exhaust fumes. In achieving this, there inevitably is an element of restrictiveness which indicates operating inefficiencies. For track cars, exhausts designed and fabricated to be the least restrictive perform better. Typically, exhausts are manufactured from cast iron, nickel alloy or steel. Competition exhausts will likely be made from stainless steel or even titanium; the latter being equally as strong yet just over half the weight of the former.
There is a wealth of innovative options that can be incorporated into these high-flow exhaust systems; better constructed flexi joints, improved TIG welds, heat treatment for greater tolerances, smaller yet more efficient catalytic converter, and a less restrictive flow pattern. Retrofitting a competition exhaust system will also require a remap to reap maximum benefit of the change. Plus the new system will invariably alter the exhaust note both at idle and under load. This may improve or worsen the exhaust note (subjective) and can increase or decrease the decibel rating (some tracks enforce upper noise limits).
