Puma: The Brazilian Performance Legacy

Puma Automóveis Ltda. is a Brazilian manufacturer of high-performance sports cars, founded in 1963 as Sociedade de Automóveis Lumimari. The brand has a rich history of innovation and racing success, making it a respected name in the world of motorsport.

Origins and Early Success

The story of Puma began with Italian-born Brazilian immigrant Rino Malzoni, who envisioned a vehicle that combined a sporty fiberglass body with a production car chassis and engine modifications to boost performance. This concept led to the creation of a prototype racing car, which achieved significant success at the Autodromo de Interlagos in 1964 and 1965.

With the prototype’s success, the first production model, the GT Malzoni, was launched in 1965. The brand was renamed Puma Veículos e Motores Ltda. in 1966, and the Puma GT, also known as the Puma DKW, was introduced. This model was an improvement on the GT Malzoni, featuring the same bodywork but with corrections to previous issues and new features. A total of 125 units were produced until Vemag, the Brazilian DKW representative, was acquired by Volkswagen in 1967.

Resurgence and Modern Era

In 2013, Puma was revived by a former industrial director under the name Puma Automóveis Ltda. The company focused on new projects, including the Puma P-052 prototype designed specifically for motorsports and the Puma GT Lumimari, named in honor of the company’s original name.

The Puma P-052 prototype was inspired by the classic Puma “shark” GTE and featured a fiberglass body, central-rear engine, and tubular structure. The goal was to produce a limited batch of 25 to 30 cars, creating a unique automobile category. The prototype was presented at the Autodromo de Interlagos in 2016, marking a significant milestone in Puma’s resurgence.
