Mabor, a Portuguese tyre brand, embodies the temperament of its homeland. With a rich history spanning over six decades, Mabor has evolved into a powerful brand that moves people across Europe, combining state-of-the-art technology with a dash of Iberian passion.
Mabor owes its name to Maria Fernandes Borges, the wife of Francisco Borges, who financed a significant share of the Mabor plant. The brand’s roots date back to 1938 when Dr. Júlio Anahori De Quental Calheiros, the Count of Covilha, established Mabor and built a tyre plant in Lousado, northern Portugal. The partnership with the Bank of Porto and General Tire/USA provided the necessary know-how and technical equipment for a successful start.
The tyre plant was completed after World War II, and the first passenger car tyre, the “Silent Safety,” rolled out on April 6, 1946. Throughout the 1950s, Mabor’s success story unfolded, with the brand holding a monopoly as the sole Portuguese tyre producer. The number of tyres manufactured annually rose to one million, solidifying Mabor’s position in the industry.
In the 1970s, Mabor ventured into new business fields, introducing the “Winter-Jet” winter tyre to northern Europe. The brand continued to innovate, joining the Continental tyre corporation in 1990 and undergoing extensive modernization. This partnership led to the launch of four new tyres with enhanced technology in 1993.
In 1994, the Mabor plant expanded, employing state-of-the-art technology to produce 20,000 tyres daily for all brands of Continental AG. The brand celebrated its 50th anniversary of tyre production in 1996 and sealed its cooperation with Volkswagen in 1999, with VW dealerships selling Mabor tyres exclusively throughout Germany.
In 2008, Mabor introduced the new UHP-tyre “Sport-Jet 2” and expanded its product lines, focusing on quality. The brand continued to innovate, launching the “Winter-Jet 2” and “Street-Jet 2” tyres. In 2015, Mabor further expanded its product lines, introducing the “Sport-Jet 3,” “Winter-Jet 3,” and “Van-Jet 3” tyres, which brought significant improvements in handling, noise, and rolling resistance.
Today, Mabor remains committed to tyre development, combining its rich heritage with cutting-edge technology to provide high-quality tyres that meet the demands of performance car enthusiasts.
