In 1983, Senna faced off against Martin Brundle for the British F3 Championship. His Formula 1 debut with Toleman nearly saw him claim victory at the rain-shortened Monaco Grand Prix, while qualifying third at Estoril put him behind Piquet's Brabham and Prost's McLaren. The following years with Lotus (1985-87) brought Senna his first wins at Estoril and Spa in 1985, as well as two more victories in 1986. He then signed for McLaren for the 1988 season, leading to four consecutive wins - his first world title in 1988, followed by an acrimonious year with team-mate Alain Prost in 1989. Senna's subsequent years with McLaren (1990-93) yielded two more world titles in 1990 and 1991, as Williams emerged to dominate the scene with Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost. In his final year for McLaren, Senna won five races before moving on to Williams, where he struggled to compete against Benetton's Michael Schumacher until tragically losing his life at Imola in 1994.
