What Is A Short Shift Kit?

A short shift kit reduces shifter throw by decreasing the angle through which the lever moves when you change gears, implicitly shortening the movements required by your hand. The reduced angular throw improves shift speeds and gives you the right edge in high-speed conditions.

How Does The Short Shift Kit Work?

When installed in a manual transmission vehicle, a short shifter modifies the fulcrum point which is moved up the shift lever. The short shifter isn’t necessarily shorter than your stock shifter, in some cases, it can be longer. However, by moving the pivot point up the lever it provides more movement on the bottom end and less movement on the top when you change gears. Even with EFI, compatibility isn't guaranteed. Some vehicles have ECUs that are difficult to integrate with aftermarket quickshifters. You may need an additional controller or a custom ECU tune.

Check the quickshifter manufacturer’s website for a list of compatible vehicles. If your vehicle isn't listed, it doesn't automatically mean it won't work—but you'll likely need professional installation and tuning to get it running correctly.

What is the best aftermarket quickshifter?

“Best” depends on your budget and what you’re using it for. There's no one-size-fits-all answer. For serious racers, a fully programmable standalone system like those from Motec or Haltech are top tier—but they come with a hefty price tag.

For sportbike riders, brands like Dynojet, HealTech, and Translogic offer excellent performance and features at more reasonable prices. These often have adjustable settings for sensitivity and shift speed. For cars, companies like Podshift or Shift-Tec are popular choices.

Consider whether you need a full quickshifter (upshifts *and* downshifts) or just an upshift-only system. Also, think about compatibility with your bike/car’s ECU and wiring harness. Research reviews and forums to see what other riders/drivers with similar setups recommend.

Can a quickshifter damage my transmission?

It's a valid concern, but modern quickshifters are designed to minimize the risk of transmission damage. Older or poorly tuned systems could cause issues, but the technology has come a long way.

The key is how the quickshifter interrupts ignition and/or fuel delivery during upshifts. A properly set-up system momentarily reduces engine load, allowing you to shift without using the clutch—and without shocking the gearbox. However, aggressive or incorrectly configured systems *can* put extra stress on synchros and gears over time.
