Carbon fibres were originally produced as long ago as 1860 by Joseph Swann, a century later in 1958 Roger Bacon crated the first high-performance carbon fibres. The first pre-treatment stabilisation stage heats the polymeric fibres up to 300°C where oxidisation and stretching occurs, the second carbonisation stage sees gasses Nitrogen and Argon added and heated up to 1,700°C, finally the third graphitisation stage is completed up to temperatures of 2,800°C. Carbon treated as above can exhibit tensile strength of 5,600 MPa / 820k PSI whereas additionally heat treated carbon fibres strength can rise to 530 GPa / 77m PSI. Carbon fibre exhibits an array of desirable properties; high tensile strength, immense stiffness, high temperature resistance, high chemical resistance, low thermal expansion plus great strength to weight ratio. These characteristics mean carbon fibre can perform well under the stress of the engine bay and crucially also represent a significant weight saving over almost all alternatives, plus the weave finish looks subjectively aesthetically pleasing when used for the exterior panelling.BRAND SPOTLIGHT
